With his former band The iOs, singer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Punsalan emerged as one of the most talented songwriters of the New York City indie pop scene. Winning accolades from independent tastemakers such as PopMatters, Buzzgrinder and Americana UK, as well as charming mainstream stalwarts The Village Voice, The New York Press and even The New York Times (who compared his band to Canadian pop supergroup Stars), Punsalan steered his creation through two albums of increasingly more textured ear candy. Signed to indie powerhouse label Kanine Records, The iOs albums left critics noting Punsalan's unmistakable talent for creating catchy hooks while imbuing his nuanced lyrics with an emotional heft.
With such a varied range of haunting melodies to playful beats it was only a matter of time until the marketplace came calling. Punsalan's amazing ability to custom sound-alike tracks in any genre led to him being one of the go-to composers for Madison Avenue advertising agencies. They often relied on his quick turnaround and vast database of pre-recorded tracks to help pitch their proposed ad campaigns to producers and to eventually score their finished products. His compositions have been featured in several commercials including ones for the Xbox Natal and Blackberry Storm. As a former NYU film major, Punsalan also naturally fell into scoring independent films. His talent for weaving multiple influences together to underscore the essence of a scene has resulted in his aural presence at film festivals across the country.
Recently relocated to Los Angeles, Punsalan has launched a new band called Wishboat while continuing to compose for radio, television and film. |
